GREENWOOD, S.C. — Greenwood County voters on Tuesday gave Greenwood School District 50 the go-ahead to borrow up to $175 million for new schools and building upgrades across the district.
Election night returns showed the measure passing by a wide margin, 13,923 votes to 4,957.
District officials have said the general obligation borrowing should not require a tax increase. The money is aimed at aging buildings, campus safety and bus transportation, and at making room for more students as enrollment grows.
Plans call for building new elementary schools, adding on to and renovating current campuses, safety and infrastructure work at schools across the county, a new District Services Center, plus better spaces for arts students.
In a statement, Superintendent Shane Goodwin thanked residents who studied the plan and voted, and said the district will now turn to carrying out the projects with care. Board chair Clay Sprouse pledged that trustees will be open and careful with the money, and the district promised regular updates as work gets underway.
