GREENWOOD, S.C. — Brandon Smith will stay on as mayor of Greenwood after city voters handed him a third term Tuesday, giving him more than twice as many votes as challenger James Long.
Smith finished with 3,722 votes, or 68.52%, in unofficial state election returns. Long drew 1,668 votes, or 30.71%, and another 42 ballots went to write-in names. All precincts had reported by the end of the night.
Long conceded later Tuesday in a statement issued by his campaign. He congratulated Smith, thanked the people who backed him and asked residents to stay involved in the life of the city.
Smith, a Greenwood native, first won the office in November 2018 and was finishing his second term. Greenwood uses a council-manager form of government, Julie Wilkie is city manager, and the city budget for fiscal 2025 was about $69.2 million.
The rest of the city ballot offered voters no choices. All of its races were nonpartisan, and the three council members whose seats were up each ran alone. Robert Dean collected 657 votes in Ward 2, Johnathan Bass collected 1,148 votes in Ward 4 and Ronnie Ables collected 806 votes in Ward 6.
Henry O. Watts was also unopposed for the at-large seat on the Commissioners of Public Works board and received 4,482 votes.
The totals remain unofficial until election officials certify them.
