News Summary

Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries in Greenwood, SC, has launched a campaign for a new 25,000-square-foot healing and trauma center aimed at supporting vulnerable children and families. This initiative, announced during an event at the Greenwood Country Club, emphasizes a neurosequential model to address trauma. The Kauffmann family has made a significant donation to aid this project, enhancing Connie Maxwell’s century-long legacy of care and support for children in need.

Greenwood, South Carolina – Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries (CMCM) is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a new 25,000-square-foot healing and trauma center aimed at supporting vulnerable children and families. This initiative was announced during a recent event hosted at the Greenwood Country Club, marking the launch of the “For the Dreams of Children” campaign.

With a focus on understanding trauma and brokenness, the healing and trauma center seeks to position Connie Maxwell as a national leader in healing and ministry dedicated to children and families in need. CMCM President Danny Nicholson expressed gratitude for the commitment and sacrifices made by supporters rallying behind this important cause.

The center will employ a neurosequential model that revolves around brain function and trauma, ensuring that it addresses the complex needs of children dealing with adverse experiences. Key contributors to the presentation for the new facility included architect Nathan Schutte, engineer Yancey Robertson, and trauma expert Michele Maikoetter, who elucidated the critical barriers children and families face in accessing necessary services. Such challenges often include financial constraints, transportation issues, fears, and the stigma associated with mental health.

Schutte underscored the significance of the center, which will be situated on the existing Connie Maxwell campus. This strategic location will enhance the organization’s ability to offer comprehensive services to children in need. A highlight of the project is the development of a garden featuring a “biblical journey to healing”, complete with spaces for prayer, meditation, and reflection. The garden will incorporate symbolic elements such as statues of children, a monument made of Joshua stones of remembrance, and a labyrinth designed to promote serenity and tranquility.

In a significant boost to the campaign, the Kauffmann family has pledged a generous $1 million donation to support the Dream of Children initiative. This donation is earmarked for the construction of the Howard and Suzanne Kauffmann Auditorium within the new McCall Center, furthering Connie Maxwell’s mission to assist children from challenging backgrounds.

Connie Maxwell has a long-standing history, having served as a refuge for orphans and needy children since its founding in 1892. The organization aims to provide residential care, family care, and foster care services to children and families throughout South Carolina. Recently, the organization demonstrated its resilience by responding to the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, garnering substantial community support following the storm’s impact on its facilities.

Currently, over 70 children reside in cottages at the Connie Maxwell campus, where they receive care aimed at helping them recover from childhood trauma. The new healing and trauma center represents a continuation of Connie Maxwell’s enduring legacy of faith, healing, and service, having positively affected the lives of children for over 133 years.
