News Summary

Lander University in Greenwood, SC, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a cutting-edge nursing building, enhancing educational opportunities for nursing students. This new facility, supported by state and federal funding, addresses the critical demand for healthcare professionals in South Carolina. The building will feature modern classrooms, simulation labs, and collaborative spaces to better train students. Set to open in fall 2026, this project signifies Lander’s commitment to improving nursing education and contributing to the local healthcare workforce.

Greenwood, South Carolina – Lander University held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new state-of-the-art nursing building on May 6, coinciding with National Nurses Day. The facility, designed to enhance educational opportunities for nursing students, will feature modern amenities that include simulation laboratories, classrooms, laboratory monitoring rooms, and collaborative study areas. With the new construction, Lander is taking significant steps to address the increasing demand for qualified nurses in South Carolina.

The nursing building project received a substantial boost from the South Carolina General Assembly, which allocated funding in 2021 as part of an initiative to respond to the urgent need for healthcare professionals in the state. In addition, further federal funding was secured in 2024 to equip the new facility with advanced interactive classroom technology and simulation equipment, ensuring that students will receive hands-on training using the latest tools and techniques in the field.

Upon completion, the new nursing building will join Barratt Hall and the Self Regional Healthcare Nursing Skills Simulation Center as the third dedicated nursing facility on Lander University’s campus. Self Regional Healthcare, a key partner in nursing education at Lander, has been collaborating with the university for over 70 years and actively supports aspiring nursing students through initiatives like the Self Scholars Program, which awards scholarships to outstanding nursing candidates.

Statistics indicate the positive impact of this collaboration; this spring, 43% of Lander University’s nursing graduates are set to start their careers at Self Regional Healthcare, signaling a strengthening workforce in the local healthcare sector. The new facility is anticipated to further enhance the quality of nursing education, making it easier for students to gain real-world training that is essential for navigating the complexities of the evolving healthcare environment.

Lander University President Richard Cosentino stressed that the groundbreaking ceremony is more than just the start of a construction project; it signifies a commitment to enhancing nursing education and addressing the pressing nursing shortages within the state. Similarly, Dr. Matt Logan, President and CEO of Self Regional Healthcare, noted that the new building would create vast opportunities for upcoming nursing professionals while enriching healthcare education in the region.

The construction of the nursing building is expected to be completed by December of this year, with an official opening planned for the fall of 2026. As facilities are set to offer students the best possible learning experience, it aligns with the broader goal of cultivating skilled healthcare providers who can meet the needs of local communities and contribute effectively to the healthcare workforce.

This new development at Lander University highlights the institution’s ongoing commitment to adapt to the healthcare industry’s demands and reinforces the collaborative efforts between educational institutions and healthcare providers in South Carolina. The expansion not only promises to improve nursing education but is also a crucial step towards enhancing healthcare services across the state.
