NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — State utility regulators will collect public comments at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Lonnie Hamilton III Public Services Building, 4045 Bridgeview Drive, on NextEra Energy’s plan to buy Dominion Energy’s parent company, a deal valued at about $67 billion.
Dominion Energy and NextEra submitted their merger filings to the Public Service Commission on July 15. If commissioners approve the combination, Dominion would become a NextEra subsidiary. The utility serves about 820,000 accounts in 24 counties stretching from the Midlands through the Lowcountry. The companies say the sale would help Dominion keep up with demand and would deliver an average $10 monthly credit on residential electric bills for two years after the transaction closes.
State consumer officials have stepped into the case on behalf of ratepayers. An earlier in-person session was held Nov. 5 at the Aiken County Government Center, 1930 University Parkway. Thursday’s hearing is in Charleston County Council Chambers on the building’s second floor.
Another public session is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 17 at the state archives auditorium at 8301 Parklane Road. The commission also set a Dec. 8 hearing at its own hearing room, 101 Executive Center Drive, from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., in person or online. People who want to speak can preregister.
