ABBEVILLE, S.C. — Two new members will join Abbeville City Council in January after Tuesday voting, and a third seat will be settled in a runoff.
Ellen Earle Leverett won the District 2 special election with 82 votes, or 66.67%, against 40 votes for Sann Lomax. The seat opened when Faye Thomas became mayor, and the winner gets a full four-year term. Thomas won the special mayoral election in July over John Sutherland.
Sutherland also lost his District 3 council seat Tuesday. Chris Edwards beat him 57 votes to 37, taking 58.76% of the vote.
District 4 is not decided. Incumbent Chris Crawford led with 57 votes, or 38.51%, ahead of Deanna Ashley at 53 votes and Joe Finley Jr. at 36. State law requires a majority to win outright, so Crawford and Ashley move on to a runoff.
Two incumbents held on. Jason Edwards kept District 6 with 116 votes, or 72.05%, over Jon E. Porter, and Stanley Marshall drew 126 votes in District 1, where he had no opponent. All of the council races were nonpartisan.
