LAURENS, S.C. — Greenwood High football punched its playoff ticket Friday night, cashing in five Laurens turnovers for 34 points in a 47-21 rivalry win at K.C. Hanna Stadium.
The Eagles came in at 3-6 and sitting just outside the Class 4A Upper State playoff field in the RPI standings, so the regular-season finale was a must-win. The result guarantees Greenwood a place in the AAAA bracket. The Eagles now stand 4-6, with a 2-3 mark against region opponents.
Laurens led 14-7 in the second quarter before a high snap on a punt from its own end zone handed Greenwood the ball at the 1-yard line, and the Eagles tied it before halftime. After the break Greenwood pulled away, returning three turnovers for touchdowns, including a 58-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter.
The night carried extra meaning for Greenwood coach Chris Liner, a Greenwood High graduate who coached Laurens from 2014 to 2019 before taking over his alma mater in 2020. It was the first meeting between the schools in six years, and Greenwood holds a 34-15-1 lead in the all-time series.
Laurens dropped to 4-6 and will learn its postseason fate when the brackets come out this weekend.
