BRANCHVILLE, S.C. — The Ware Shoals High volleyball team gets its toughest test of the season Monday night, a second-round road trip to top-seeded Branchville in South Carolina’s Class 1A bracket.
First serve against the Branchville Yellow Jackets is set for 6:00 p.m. at Branchville. The winner stays alive in the SCHSL Class 1A state playoffs, and the loser’s season ends.
Ware Shoals earned the trip by knocking off Blackville-Hilda on the road last Wednesday. Ware Shoals took the first two sets 25-14 and 25-12, dropped the third 23-25, then closed out the match 25-21.
That opener came on the road even though Ware Shoals sat at No. 16 in the playoff rankings for close to two weeks. Blackville-Hilda slipped past the Hornets on the final day teams could submit statistics and claimed the home match.
Branchville reached the second round with a sweep of Scott’s Branch, winning 25-19, 25-5 and 28-10.
Ware Shoals is led by a first-year varsity head coach who spent several seasons with the program at the subvarsity level. The Hornets lean on a senior captain who is among the team leaders in kills and aces, a junior libero in the back row and two freshmen, including the setter who runs the offense.
