GREENWOOD, S.C. — Lander honored its seniors Saturday at Van Taylor Stadium, then spent most of the afternoon chasing a 2-0 deficit against nationally ranked Flagler before falling 2-1 to the Peach Belt Conference regular-season champions in Greenwood, S.C.
The 16th-ranked Saints struck twice in a six-minute span, in the 22nd and 28th minutes. Lander answered in the 39th when Orran Mushet sent a cross to Chad Haynes, who nodded it down for freshman Omar Erwa to finish for his third goal. Haynes nearly tied it three minutes later, but his header off another Mushet cross sailed just over the bar.
Greenwood native Panos Migdalas made his first career start in goal and stopped seven shots. Lander also held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. The Bearcats had lost the first meeting 1-0 at Flagler on Sept. 26.
Lander sits fifth in the league standings but can jump to fourth and earn a home quarterfinal in the conference tournament with a win over Clayton State on Monday. That 5 p.m. match at Van Taylor Stadium is a makeup of a Sept. 19 date, and the teams played to a 1-1 tie in Morrow, Ga., on Oct. 9.
