Greenwood, SC – Dr. Edward Mims Mobley, Jr., a renowned internal medicine physician, passed away peacefully at home on June 25, 2025, at the age of 94. His contributions to the medical field and his community in Greenwood were significant, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.

Born on June 30, 1930, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dr. Mobley was the son of Edward Mims Mobley, Sr. and Saline Clark Mobley. He spent his early years in Bishopville and Edgefield, South Carolina, where he developed a strong community connection that remained throughout his life. After graduating from The Citadel, Dr. Mobley pursued his passion for medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree with a specialization in internal medicine.

During his medical training, Dr. Mobley married Mary Jane Brooks, with whom he shared a loving partnership for 73 years. Following his education, he served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy, completing his duty in Texas before making a pivotal move to Greenwood in 1962. There, he joined Dr. Wiley Price in an internal medicine practice, establishing himself as a well-respected physician in the community.

Dr. Mobley’s influence extended beyond his practice. He served as the President of the Self Memorial Hospital staff and held the position of President of the South Carolina Medical Association. His dedication to internal medicine earned him recognition as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. In 1997, he received the prestigious Laureate Award from the same organization, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to healthcare.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Mobley was an avid learner and creator. He enjoyed various leisure activities, including golf and snow skiing. Together with his wife, he landscaped their home, showcasing his skills as an architect and contractor. He took pride in crafting the plans for their family home and medical office buildings. As a master furniture designer, he transformed hardwood trees gifted by friends into beautiful furnishings.

Dr. Mobley was also a passionate writer and traveler. His explorations around the world inspired him to create a fictional book and contribute commentaries to esteemed publications, including the Index Journal, Edgefield Advertiser, and Wall Street Journal. Furthermore, he showcased his talents in the arts by participating in local theatrical productions, notably playing roles in Greenwood Community Theatre, including “Harvey” and a one-man play about Harry Truman entitled “A Man of Decision.”

Dr. Mobley is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Jane Mobley, as well as their children: Saline Mobley Gerber, Carol Mobley Holland and her spouse Tom, Jean Mobley Sasser Meisels, and Mims Mobley III and his wife Lisa. His grandchildren include Brooks Gerber and Matt Brown, Taylor Gerber Brown and Elliott, Libba Holland Roach and Brandon, TJ Holland and Kenzie, Hampton Sasser and Andrea, Lane Sasser DeVries and Jake, Mims Mobley IV, Lougen Mobley, and Reynolds Mobley. Additionally, he is survived by three great-grandchildren: Reed and June Brown, along with Robin, Davies, and Thomas Brown. His stepsister, Helen Rawlings Feltham, also survives him.

The family will host visitors at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection Emmaus Hall on July 20, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a service at the church beginning at 2:00 p.m. They express heartfelt gratitude to those who provided care to Dr. Mobley during his final days. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Citadel Foundation and Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries. Blyth Funeral Home & Cremation Services is assisting the Mobley family during this time of loss.
