News Summary

Lander University has commenced construction on a new state-of-the-art nursing building, designed to enhance education for nursing students and address the healthcare workforce shortage in South Carolina. The facility will feature advanced simulation laboratories and modern classrooms. Funded by state and federal allocations, this new building represents Lander’s commitment to nursing education and will bolster partnerships with local healthcare providers. Set to open in fall 2026, this initiative aims to prepare students for a successful career in healthcare, strengthening the region’s nursing programs.

Greenwood, SC – Lander University has officially broken ground on a new state-of-the-art nursing building as of May 6, 2025, coinciding with National Nurses Day. This new facility is set to enhance the educational resources available to nursing students and address the critical shortage of healthcare professionals in South Carolina.

The forthcoming building will be located on Lander’s campus and is designed to include advanced features such as simulation laboratories, modern classrooms, laboratory monitoring rooms, and areas for collaborative study and team discussions. These enhancements aim to provide nursing students with the tools necessary for a comprehensive and practical education, preparing them for the rigors of real-world healthcare environments.

Funding for the construction project was approved by the South Carolina General Assembly in 2021, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for more healthcare professionals in the state. Additionally, a federal funding allocation received in 2024 will equip the building with the latest interactive classroom technologies and simulation equipment, further enhancing the educational experience.

This new nursing building will mark Lander University’s third nursing education facility, joining Barratt Hall and the Self Regional Healthcare Nursing Skills Simulation Center. The university has been a vital partner with Self Regional Healthcare, which has significantly contributed to the nursing program through various initiatives, including the establishment of the Self Scholars Program that offers scholarships to top nursing students.

According to data from recent nursing student cohorts, 43% of the nursing graduates in spring 2025 are expected to find employment at Self Regional Healthcare. This statistic underscores the strong partnership between Lander University and Self Regional Healthcare, which has been cultivated over more than 70 years. The collaboration emphasizes the increasing demand for well-trained nursing professionals in the region.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Lander University President Richard Cosentino noted the importance of this partnership with Self Regional Healthcare. The construction of the new building is seen as a vital step towards enhancing healthcare access and providing better resources for future nursing professionals.

Self Regional Healthcare’s President and CEO Dr. Matt Logan pointed out that the new facility will not only benefit students but will also play a crucial role in fulfilling the organization’s mission to improve community health care. The investment in nursing education is considered a key element in addressing public health challenges and ensuring a robust healthcare workforce.

Dr. Holisa Wharton, the Dean of the School of Nursing, expressed excitement about potential future collaborations that would contribute to innovative nursing education and improved healthcare access. The implementation of simulation labs, equipped with realistic learning scenarios, is expected to boost students’ confidence and better prepare them for clinical roles.

The new nursing building is projected to open its doors in fall 2026, with construction expected to be completed by December of this year. The introduction of this facility aligns with Lander University’s ongoing commitment to elevate its nursing programs and respond effectively to the healthcare needs of the community.

As Lander University continues to expand its resources and facilities for nursing education, it affirms its dedication to training the next generation of healthcare professionals capable of meeting the ever-increasing demands of the healthcare industry in South Carolina.
