Dark storm clouds and lightning in Greenwood County

News Summary

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Greenwood County, South Carolina, prompting residents to seek shelter. The storms may bring gusty winds up to 40 mph, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding. Early school closures have been announced in preparation for the severe weather. Community members are urged to stay indoors and stay safe as the storms approach.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Buzz Around Greenwood County

In a challenge for the lovely folks of Greenwood County, storm clouds are brewing and a sense of urgency has hit the air. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, SC has issued a weather alert due to some harsh thunderstorms expected in the area. This alert is in effect until 3:30 p.m. on June 2, 2025, and comes with the potential for wind gusts hitting up to a brisk 40 mph.

No one likes to dodge a thunderstorm, but if you’re outdoors, the word is clear: find shelter! It’s better to be safe and snug indoors than be caught in nature’s tempest. The Doppler radar is keeping a close eye on a storm that’s zipping eastward at about 40 mph, presently located approximately 15 miles southeast of Greenwood — just 9 miles south of the charming Ninety Six Historic Site.

Areas Under Alert

So who should be on alert? Well, if you reside in or around Ninety Six Historic Site, Kirksey, Epworth, or Callison, it’s time to take action! And as if that’s not enough, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in play until 8 p.m. for all of Upstate South Carolina. It seems like Mother Nature is pulling out all the stops!

It’s worth noting that earlier, at 3:37 p.m. on Thursday, another weather alert was issued. This one also warned of strong thunderstorms for Greenwood County, lasting until 4:15 p.m., with some potential for pea-sized hail — that’s about 0.25 inches — and the same gusty winds of up to 40 mph.

Flooding and Safety Warnings

Torrential rainfall from the ongoing thunderstorms could lead to local flooding, making TLC for your vehicles essential! Driving through flooded roadways is a no-go during storms. The dangers are just too real. Remember that around 25 million lightning strikes hit the U.S. each year, resulting in approximately 20 fatalities. So, when you see dark clouds creeping in, your likelihood of encountering lightning rises, peaking when the storm is overhead.

During these wild weather moments, the best thing you can do is stay inside if possible. Hydroplaning is also a risk during these wet conditions. It occurs when a vehicle loses traction on water-covered roads—definitely not a situation you want to end up in!

To illustrate just how impactful these thunderstorms have been, a tree tragically fell onto a home in the Greenwood Forest neighborhood of northwest Harris County due to severe weather, resulting in significant roof damage. Deputies checked the situation, but reports about injuries are still murky.

Community Response

In the wake of storms, the community has rolled up their sleeves to assess damage and kickstart recovery efforts. Meanwhile, the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith and Greenwood Public Schools have proactively called for early school closures due to the anticipated severe weather. The UAFS has scheduled to close its campus at 2 p.m., releasing students at 2:30 p.m., and all afternoon activities are also getting the axe. Other Greenwood schools will also dismiss early, although release times may vary. It’s all hands on deck as everyone prepares for the storm ahead.

So, residents of Greenwood County, keep those weather alerts handy! Stay indoors, be safe, and let’s get through this storm together!
