GREENWOOD, S.C. — Two Greenwood football programs packed up their gear for the year after road losses Friday night, with Emerald falling 56-21 at Powdersville in the Class 3A bracket and Greenwood Christian dropping a 78-46 shootout at Calhoun Academy in the SCISA 2A opener.
For Emerald, it was a second loss to Powdersville in barely two weeks. The Patriots had already won 41-21 on the Vikings’ home field on Oct. 23, and Emerald closed its regular season with a 35-30 home defeat to Belton-Honea Path. Powdersville now advances to meet Wren on Nov. 13.
In St. Matthews, the Cavaliers piled up 78 points on a Hawks team that arrived at 7-3 after a 2-2 mark in Region 2 play. Calhoun Academy had come in scoring 45.3 points a game, and the loss leaves Greenwood Christian at 7-4.
The defeat closes the book on a Hawks senior class that delivered three straight winning seasons and two trips in a row to the semifinals. Senior running back Isaiah Scott-Palacios entered the night with 1,687 rushing yards, third most in South Carolina.
Elsewhere around the Lakelands, Dixie was blanked 7-0 at Hardeeville, and Greenwood High fell 42-7 at Indian Land.
Two area teams are still waiting to play. Abbeville, No. 3 in the final Class 1A media poll, opens its run in the second round against Eau Claire, while Saluda, No. 3 in Class 2A, is lined up for a possible second-round rematch with Orangeburg-Wilkinson.
