GREENWOOD, S.C. — Greenwood School District 50 has finished its public sales pitch for a $175 million bond referendum, and the decision now moves to voters on Nov. 3.
The district held its final community presentation Monday evening at the Genesis Education Center, walking residents through the building plans the borrowing would pay for. District leaders also set up an email box, [email protected], for questions from people who could not attend.
On the project list are a new Benjamin E. Mays Elementary School that would merge with Lakeview Pinecrest Elementary, additions at Rice and Hodges elementary schools, and new stage lighting at the Greenwood Performing Arts Center. The district says the package also covers safety and transportation upgrades, room for enrollment growth and other renovations across its campuses.
District officials say the plan carries no projected tax increase. Superintendent Shane Goodwin has argued that waiting until older bonds from the 2000s are retired could push the cost of the same work up by as much as $100 million.
Bond money could go only to facilities, not to salaries or day-to-day operations. Planning and design work has already started, and the district has posted renderings along with a sample of the ballot question.
