Monty Hobson Gunn, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on August 20, 2025, at the age of 85. Monty was the husband of Kathleen McQuown Gunn and the late Marit Kristiansen Gunn, leaving behind a rich legacy that his family will cherish.
Surviving Monty are his three daughters: Anne Soviero, married to Paul, of Hilton Head, SC; Mary Toro Owens, married to Matt, of Irmo, SC; and Michelle Toro, married to Hunter Cape, of Greenwood, SC. He was a proud grandfather to Sofia, Analisa, Vincent Soviero, Cassidy Robertson, Tanner, and Talon Owens. Monty is also survived by his sisters, Delia Boyett of Gulf Shores, AL; Nancy Fields of Pensacola, FL; Verna Neese, married to Dale, of Milton, FL; and numerous beloved siblings-in-law, nieces, and nephews, including his notable nephew, Howard Fields of Lillian, AL.
Monty was born on February 27, 1940, in Pensacola, FL. He served honorably in the US Navy for four years and continued his military commitment for 16 years in the Army National Guard. After his service, he worked as a plumber and handyman until the age of 75, earning the respect and admiration of those who knew him.
A long-time member of the Roman Catholic Church, Monty found joy in his faith and community. His passion for NASCAR was well known, and he enjoyed sharing stories from his daily “Breakfast Club” at McDonald’s, where he connected with friends and neighbors. Monty had a special bond with Emil and Linn, whom he considered family, traveling to Norway multiple times to visit them and their son, Thyge. He also treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren during his many trips to Columbia and Hilton Head.
Monty took great pride in caring for the family farm, often mowing the lawn and imparting valuable life lessons to his family, ensuring they knew the importance of hard work and dedication.
