Greenwood, SC – Lander University will host a free public talk by Kevin Hines, a renowned mental health advocate and global speaker focused on suicide prevention, on August 26. The event will take place at the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium, starting at 6:30 p.m. This program is sponsored by Lander’s Wellness Center and the Office of the Dean of Students.

Kevin Hines is notable for his powerful message regarding mental wellness and suicide prevention. His personal journey includes a life-altering suicide attempt in September 2000, when he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder two years prior, his attempt resulted in falling 220 feet into the San Francisco Bay, leading to serious physical injuries such as shattered vertebrae and lacerated organs. Remarkably, he was rescued by the Coast Guard with the unexpected aid of a sea lion that kept him afloat until help arrived.

After being rushed to Marin General Hospital, Hines underwent an innovative surgery that ultimately saved his life. Although the injuries from his fall were severe, he recovered with minimal physical trauma, aside from some scars. His survival is a testament to hope; fewer than 1% of individuals who have jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge have lived to share their story.

Since his recovery, Hines has dedicated his life to spreading awareness about mental health issues. His memoir, “Cracked not Broken: Surviving and Thriving after a Suicide Attempt,” published in 2013, has motivated many, with countless individuals stating that his story has been instrumental in their own recovery. In 2018, he also produced and directed the award-winning film “Suicide the Ripple Effect,” which has been recognized at the Nice International Film Festival.

Hines has received numerous accolades for his efforts in mental health advocacy, including being recognized as one of CNN’s Champions of Change in 2019. His work has garnered attention from various organizations, such as the National Council of Behavioral Health and the U.S. Departments of Veteran’s Affairs and Defense. His messages about resilience and the importance of seeking help resonate with audiences from diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
