Flash Flood Warning Issued for Abbeville and Greenwood

Flooded area in Abbeville during heavy rainfall

News Summary

A flash flood warning is in effect for Abbeville and Greenwood counties due to heavy rainfall that has resulted in ongoing flash flooding. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to seek higher ground and follow local evacuation instructions. The National Weather Service has highlighted the dangers of navigating flooded roads, stressing safety measures to avoid flood-related incidents.

Abbeville, SC – A flash flood warning has been issued for Abbeville and Greenwood counties following heavy rainfall recorded in the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg SC announced the warning at 6:11 a.m. on Tuesday, which is in effect until 9:15 a.m. The warning comes after Doppler radar indicated that between 2 to 3.5 inches of rain fell since 3 a.m., with additional rainfall amounts of up to 1 inch anticipated.

The weather conditions have already led to ongoing flash flooding, with increased risks expected shortly. Areas most vulnerable to flooding include small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and various poorly drained or low-lying spots. Specific locations at heightened risk include Long Cane Creek, McCord Creek, Keller Branch, and other low-lying areas in Greenwood and Abbeville.

Other communities under the flash flood warning include Greenwood, Abbeville, Ware Shoals, Cokesbury, Hodges, Shoals Junction, and Promised Land. Residents in these areas are urged to take immediate action, especially those living in flood-prone regions. It is critical for individuals and families to seek higher ground and follow all evacuation instructions provided by local authorities.

The NWS has emphasized the importance of safety during these hazardous conditions. Residents are reminded of the key safety phrase, “Turn around, don’t drown,” when encountering flooded roads, as a significant number of flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles attempting to drive through inundated areas. Homeowners are also encouraged to secure their properties by locking up and disconnecting utilities and appliances, provided they have enough time to do so.

For those in homes or structures at risk of flooding, it is advised to avoid entering basements or rooms where electrical outlets or cords may come into contact with water. If individuals hear sparks or buzzing noises, they should evacuate immediately and refrain from entering any water that may be electrically charged. Even 6 inches of moving water can pose a serious threat, easily knocking individuals off their feet and leading to dangerous situations.

In cases where individuals become trapped by moving water, the NWS advises moving to the highest available ground and contacting emergency services by dialing 911. They further highlighted the dangers associated with driving during such floods, noting that as little as 12 inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away most vehicles. Hydroplaning is another danger, occurring when a vehicle loses control due to rapid water buildup in front of the tires on wet roads.

The ongoing weather forecast for the Abbeville and Greenwood area indicates a mix of sun and clouds with a high temperature of 77°F and a 100% chance of rain, potentially bringing about half an inch of additional heavy rainfall. Prior reports indicate that portions of Greenwood County received over five inches of rain in a 24-hour period, prompting the issuance of this flash flood warning.

The Greenwood County Emergency Alert System proactively informed residents by sending alerts via phone calls, emails, and text messages shortly after the warning was issued. As a precaution, Cobb Road in Greenwood has been barricaded due to standing water near a Dollar General entrance.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and to keep apprised of updates from local officials regarding the weather conditions and safety measures appropriate for their areas.
