Heat Advisory Issued for Multiple South Carolina Counties

Landscape of South Carolina with heat waves and safety precautions taken by residents.

News Summary

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for various South Carolina counties, including Abbeville and Greenwood. Temperatures are expected to rise, with heat index values peaking at 107°F. Residents are advised to take safety precautions, especially outdoor workers who should take regular breaks in cool areas. The advisory follows a previous warning and highlights the risks of heat-related illnesses amid soaring temperatures and humidity. Meteorologists predict the hottest day of the week to be Monday, with potential thunderstorms also on the horizon, bringing hazardous conditions.

Greenville, SC – The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an updated heat advisory for multiple counties in South Carolina on Friday afternoon, as extreme temperatures and high humidity levels pose serious health risks. This advisory, which went into effect at 12:41 p.m., particularly affects Abbeville and Greenwood counties and will remain in effect until 7 p.m.

The heat index values are predicted to soar to an alarming 107 degrees Fahrenheit. The NWS has cautioned that the combination of high temperatures and elevated humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses, emphasizing the need for residents to take precautions while outdoors.

As part of the safety recommendations, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) urges outdoor workers to implement regular rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments to reduce the likelihood of heat stress. Additionally, individuals experiencing symptoms related to overheating, such as dizziness, nausea, or rapid heartbeat, are advised to relocate to a cooler, shaded area immediately. In the event of a heat-related emergency, calling 911 is strongly recommended.

This current heat advisory follows an initial advisory released on August 1, 2025. Moreover, on Tuesday, another advisory was enacted covering a broader area, including Greater Rutherford, Eastern Polk, Iredell, Catawba, Rowan, Cleveland, Lincoln, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, and Union counties, which is effective until 8 p.m. on the day of its issuance. The same guidelines concerning heat index values and preventive health measures apply across these locations.

Furthermore, a separate heat advisory was issued for Alexander County, which is applicable until 2 a.m. on Monday, urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this exceptionally hot weather.

Meteorologist Bradford Ambrose is predicting Monday to be the hottest day of the week, with expected heat indices reaching up to 108 degrees. On this day, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are also anticipated, which could lead to wind gusts ranging from 40 to 60 mph, heavy rainfall, and possible small hail.

The forecast indicates that high temperatures on Monday will vary, with the Upstate hitting the mid to upper 90s, while the mountains remain slightly cooler at nearly 90 degrees. As the week progresses, temperatures are expected to slightly decrease, with Tuesday likely to bring elevated rain chances along with temperatures around 90 degrees in the Upstate and mid-80s in mountainous regions.

The weather outlook suggests that Wednesday will see a further decline in both temperatures and humidity, with highs around 90 degrees in the Upstate becoming more common. A cold front is anticipated to cross the region later in the week, resulting in spotty storm chances on Thursday. Isolated storm chances are slated to return Friday and persist through the weekend, with highs projected to remain in the low to mid-90s in the Upstate, while mountainous areas may see upper 80s.

In addition to the ongoing heat advisory, the NWS is actively monitoring a small area of low pressure in the southwestern Tropical Atlantic for potential development, which could influence weather patterns in the coming days.

Residents are urged to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and heed all advisories to ensure safety during this extreme heat wave.
