Saluda, SC – Aubrey Leavell Padgett, Sr., a notable figure in the Saluda community, passed away on June 20, 2025, at the age of 93. Padgett was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, remembered for his dedication to service and his unwavering commitment to his local community.
In his final years, Padgett resided at the Oaks at Greenwood, where he had lived for the past two years. Born in Saluda County, he was the son of the late Edwin Harvey Padgett and Willette Temple Padgett. He was a devoted family man, having been the husband of the late Mary Lois Kirkland Padgett, with whom he shared many years of companionship.
Padgett’s service to his country included time spent with the South Carolina National Guard, specifically within the 122 Engineering Company (CSE) based in Saluda. His career also included a long tenure at Greenwood Mills, from which he eventually retired. Those who knew him often described him as a person of remarkable work ethic and quiet strength, earning him deep respect throughout the community.
For over 70 years, Padgett was an esteemed member of Red Bank Baptist Church, where he served not only as the congregation’s oldest male member but also as a continuous source of wisdom and guidance. His commitment to the church was evident in his active participation and unwavering support of its mission.
An avid lover of nature, Padgett found joy in gardening and working on his farm, showcasing his appreciation for the outdoors. His passion for nurturing plants and crops further illustrated his dedication to the simple pleasures of life.
Padgett is survived by his daughter, Beth Padgett of Greenville, and three sons: Leavell “Lee” Padgett of Greenwood, Russell Padgett (Roxanne) of Simpsonville, and Joe Padgett (Diane) of Saluda. His legacy continues with five granddaughters: Marsha Dawkins (Chris), Haley Quarles (T.J. Storey), Morgan Rice (Josh), Kasey McNair (Ben), and Meredith Padgett, as well as nine great-grandchildren: Madeline Dawkins, Molly Dawkins, Allie Quarles, Joseph Storey, Burnley Rice, Barrett Rice, Aubrey Rice, Emerson Rice, and Lyla McNair. He is also remembered fondly by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Olivia P. Riley and Betty Padgett.
A memorial service to honor Aubrey Padgett’s life and contributions is scheduled for 4:00 pm on June 29, 2025, at Red Bank Baptist Church. The service will be officiated by Rev. Jonathan Deal, and following the service, the family will welcome friends and loved ones in the church social hall for fellowship and remembrance.Â
The Padgett family has expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Oaks at Greenwood and Providence Care (Hospice) for their exceptional compassion and care during Aubrey’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Red Bank Baptist Church, located at 309 E. Church Street, Saluda, SC 29138, in honor of his memory and lasting impact on the community.
