Thunderstorm clouds over Upstate South Carolina

News Summary

The National Weather Service has declared multiple severe thunderstorm warnings for areas across Upstate South Carolina, particularly affecting Abbeville, Greenwood, and nearby counties. Strong thunderstorms with potential hail and damaging winds are expected, prompting residents to seek shelter and stay alert. Key areas at risk include Calhoun Falls, Downtown Concord, and Greenville. The ongoing watch may last until late evening. As proper safety precautions are advised, reports of damaging conditions are encouraged to be relayed to the authorities.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Issued Across Upstate South Carolina

Greenville, South Carolina – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued multiple severe thunderstorm warnings across several counties in the Upstate region, with hazardous weather conditions expected throughout June 10, 2025.

The weather alert was initiated first at 6:32 p.m. for Abbeville and Greenwood counties, in effect until 7:15 p.m. Meteorologists reported strong thunderstorms characterized by pea-sized hail (0.25 inches) and wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph. At that time, Doppler radar observed a powerful storm approximately 11 miles southwest of Abbeville, near Lake Strom Thurmond, moving eastward at 35 mph. Residents in impacted areas such as Calhoun Falls, Troy, Promised Land, Bradley, Richard B Russell Dam, and Callison were advised to seek shelter indoors as the storm posed risks for downed tree limbs and flying debris.

In addition to this warning, another alert was launched earlier in the afternoon at 2:14 p.m. for the Pickens Mountains, Greater Pickens, and Greenville County. This warning was effective until 2:45 p.m. and also highlighted the forecast for wind gusts up to 40 mph and the potential for pea-sized hail. Areas such as Table Rock State Park, Caesars Head State Park, Jocassee Gorges, Pumpkintown, and Sassafras Mountain were affected by this storm system.

Later Developments

As the day progressed, the NWS issued an updated severe thunderstorm warning at 6:40 p.m. specifically for Cabarrus County. Reports indicated penny-sized hail (0.75 inches) and wind gusts as high as 60 mph. This severe thunderstorm was located near Downtown Concord and was moving east at 15 mph. Residents in areas such as Downtown Concord, West Concord, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Coddle Creek Reservoir, Kannapolis, and Harrisburg were warned to prepare for potentially damaging conditions.

In another development, a severe thunderstorm warning was established at 7:42 p.m. covering Anderson, Greenville, Laurens, Pickens, and Spartanburg counties. Wind speeds were reported at 60 mph, with hail threats reaching 0.75 inches. This storm was detected along a line extending from northwest Pickens to southeast Anderson, traveling northeast at 45 mph. Residents in Greenville Downtown, Easley, Pickens, and Taylors were instructed to move to a safer location, preferably on the lowest floor of a building.

Ongoing Weather Risks

A severe thunderstorm watch is currently in effect until 11 p.m. EDT for parts of northeastern Georgia and Upstate South Carolina. Given the dangers posed by thunderstorms, especially during the summer months, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant. Approximately 25 million lightning strikes occur in the U.S. each year, leading to an average of 20 fatalities annually, most occurring during the summer thunderstorms. The likelihood of lightning increases as a storm approaches, peaking overhead before subsiding as it moves away.

The NWS also emphasized essential safety tips during thunderstorms. These include seeking shelter indoors, avoiding proximity to water, and being aware of the risks of hydroplaning. Residents are urged to report any incidents of damaging winds, hail, or flooding to the National Weather Service. As conditions develop, the safety and well-being of the community remain the top priority.
