Boeing North Charleston Plant

News Summary

Qatar Airways has signed a historic agreement to buy up to 200 Boeing jets, a deal announced by the White House. This purchase is expected to create around 154,000 jobs annually in the U.S., particularly benefiting the Boeing plant in North Charleston, South Carolina. Local leaders are optimistic about the job growth potential, with estimates suggesting thousands of new positions. Despite recent challenges in Boeing’s production, this agreement signifies a positive shift and economic boost for the area, paving the way for increased production of the Dreamliner models.

South Carolina – Qatar Airways has entered into a groundbreaking agreement to purchase between 160 and 200 Boeing jets, an announcement made by the White House. This significant deal is projected to support approximately 154,000 jobs in the United States annually, totaling over a million jobs throughout the production and delivery period of the jets, which is slated from 2029 to 2036.

The agreement includes purchases of the Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner models. The North Charleston facility in South Carolina, where all 787 Dreamliners are assembled, is expected to see a considerable increase in job opportunities due to this deal. Currently, the North Charleston plant employs more than 8,000 workers, and local leaders are optimistic about the potential for future employment growth.

Mayor Reggie Burgess of North Charleston has indicated confidence in the local workforce’s ability to fill the new positions anticipated from this extensive contract. He highlighted that the new jobs created could reach “thousands and thousands,” emphasizing the positive economic outlook for the area.

Local business owners also expect the influx of jobs to greatly benefit the local economy by providing essential employment for working-class citizens. The agreement comes on the heels of another recent deal, where Korean Air contracted to purchase up to 50 Boeing planes, with some assembly completed in the North Charleston facility.

Boeing’s production has faced various challenges, including labor strikes and production problems, but this new contract is viewed as a significant boost following recent layoffs. In December, Boeing announced a $1 billion investment in its North Charleston plant, which aims to add 500 jobs over the next five years.

To support the increased production demand, Boeing plans to enhance Dreamliner production to 10 planes per month by 2026. This enhancement plan includes the construction of a new assembly building, a Dreamlifter servicing and testing facility, as well as additional necessary infrastructure within the North Charleston area.

Currently, Boeing has successfully delivered 42 Dreamliners and has accumulated 33 orders heading into 2025. Additionally, production recovery plans are being implemented to address ongoing issues within the supply chain that affect the manufacturing of critical components like heat exchangers, crucial for the operational efficiency of the jets.

Boeing aims to return to a production rate of five Dreamliners per month by the end of the year, aligning with its expansion and recovery strategy. The agreement with Qatar Airways marks a pivotal moment for Boeing and the economic landscape of South Carolina, offering substantial job creation and industrial growth for the coming years.
