Community and Weather Events Shape Greenwood County This February

Hey there, Greenwood County! As February rolls along, this charming community is bustling with activity, even as the weather keeps us guessing. With a mix of events and a splash of rain in the forecast, it’s always a lively time here.

Weather Forecast: What to Expect

First up, let’s talk about the weather. This week, we can expect considerable cloudiness with occasional rain showers. The high temperature is set to reach around 49°F, which means it’s time to layer up! Wind will be light and variable, so don’t forget your jacket as you step out for events.

With a 50% chance of rain, early showers will transition into cloudy skies overnight, taking the temperature down to a comfy low of 45°F. As evening rolls in, the winds from the southeast will pick up, increasing from 5 to 10 mph to a brisk 10 to 20 mph. Don’t forget to keep your umbrella close, with an additional 40% chance of rain expected overnight.

Exciting Community Events

On a more uplifting note, there are some exciting happenings around town! Sunday, February 23 is shaping up to be a special day at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, which will host a beautiful Black History program starting at 10 a.m.. The program will kick off with Sunday School, led by Rev. Patricia Tolbert. It’s a wonderful opportunity for community members to come together and celebrate history!

On Saturday, February 22, the Perfected Tabernacle of Praise will host its Family and Friends Day at 5 p.m. It’s a day designed to celebrate family and friendship, and attendees are encouraged to wear their Sunday best. There will even be prizes for the best-dressed male and female, which adds a bit of friendly competition to the festivities. Pastor Andrea Dukes-Stevens will be the guest preacher for the occasion, and dinner will be served afterward, making it an event not to be missed!

Shaky News: Earthquakes in the Area

seven earthquakes. Six of them hit near Coronaca while one was felt in Cokesbury. These quakes ranged from a magnitude 1.5 to 2.53 on the Richter scale. Thankfully, they generally caused no significant damage, but there was enough perceptible shaking to get everyone’s attention!

Interestingly, these earthquakes coincided with the start of South Carolina’s Earthquake Preparation Week. Just last month, a 1.71-magnitude quake was also reported near the North Carolina-South Carolina border. It’s a good reminder for residents to be prepared, even in a relatively calm area like ours.

Winter Weather Warnings and Advisories

On top of that, Upstate South Carolina is under a winter weather storm warning due to a snowstorm that’s making its presence felt in the area. Residents can expect flurries and varying snow totals throughout the weekend, with snow and ice accumulation leading to hazardous road conditions. Temperatures are predicted to dip into the upper 20s by Friday night, so make sure to drive safely.

Community Support and Advocacy

In the midst of all this, let’s take a moment to recognize the tireless work being done in our community. Teresa Goodman, executive director of Community Initiatives, has dedicated her life to improving the quality of life in Greenwood County. With approximately 17% of families living below the poverty line and around 12% experiencing food insecurity, Goodman is a beacon of hope. She also founded her consulting firm, Vision Savvy Consulting for Nonprofit Marketing Strategies, and has taken on various leadership roles to support local organizations.

As we delve deeper into February, let’s embrace the community spirit of Greenwood County. Whether rain or shine, the warmth of our gatherings shines through!
