GREENWOOD, S.C. — Attorney General Alan Wilson, the Republican nominee for governor, brought his campaign bus to uptown Greenwood on Thursday morning, Oct. 22, asking local Republicans to turn out and vote the whole party ticket on Nov. 3.
The hour-long gathering at the Inn on the Square on East Court Avenue was the first stop of the day on his Victory Bus Tour. Greenwood Republican Women put it together with GOP groups from Greenwood, Newberry, McCormick and Saluda counties.
State Rep. John McCravy introduced Wilson and 8th Circuit Solicitor David Stumbo, the Republican candidate for attorney general, who talked about the years he and Wilson spent working together as prosecutors. Others in the audience included Rep. Daniel Gibson, Sheriff Dennis Kelly and Greenwood Mayor Brandon Smith, none of whom addressed the gathering.
Wilson described the trip as a listening tour and named three priorities: lowering the cost of living for South Carolina families, helping businesses stay profitable and holding government accountable. He promised to stay accessible to voters if elected and told the crowd that statewide offices belong to the public, not to the people who hold them.
He also pressed supporters who had backed other candidates in the primaries to rally behind Sen. Darline Graham, the Republican facing Democrat Annie Andrews for U.S. Senate, arguing that control of the chamber shapes which federal judges are confirmed.
Three other names join Wilson on the governor’s ballot: Democrat Jermaine Johnson, Michael Addison of the United Citizens Party and the Green Party’s Walid Hakim.
From Greenwood the bus headed to a meet-and-greet in Spartanburg and an afternoon rally at District Park in Easley. The schedule for Friday, Oct. 23, lists a noon rally at a Hartsville brewery, a stop in Chesterfield and an evening rally in Florence.
