GREENWOOD, S.C. — Greenwood County Council is being asked Tuesday to sign off on Greenwood School District 50’s plan to sell its Genesis Education Center to the Lander Foundation, one of several property and economic development items on a long agenda.

The regular session starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Greenwood County Library, 600 Monument St., after a 4 p.m. closed-door executive session. Council’s regular schedule puts it in the library’s American Veteran’s Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday and the third Tuesday of every month.

The Genesis request will be presented by County Attorney Carson Penney. The District 50 board voted in August to let Superintendent Shane Goodwin’s office sign a purchase agreement with the foundation, with the sale depending on county and state requirements being met. The former Northside Middle School campus on Glenwood Street covers 21.9 acres and holds about 70,000 square feet of space. The foundation plans to lease it to Lander University, growing the school’s acreage by roughly 12%, while the district’s adult education, child nutrition and instructional services programs stay in the building for as long as two years.

Council will also hear the title of Ordinance 2026-32 on first reading, an agreement for fees in lieu of taxes with a company the county is calling Project Apollo. The agreement would set payments in place of property taxes on new economic development property and include special source credits; Economic Development Director James Bateman is listed to present it.

Budget resolutions on the agenda would set aside money for the county’s Data Center Ad Hoc Committee, reauthorize funding to finish renovations at Park Plaza, with an update on that work, and shift money from the Airport Improvement Fund to the Airport Grant Fund to cover federal and state grants. The Sheriff’s Office is seeking a variance from the procurement policy so it can buy a vehicle with DEA equitable sharing funds.

Public hearings are scheduled on second readings of three ordinances: taking one parcel out of the Idlewood Special Tax District, updating the county zoning rule on abandoned or obsolete signs, and rezoning about 2.39 acres at 116 Old Mount Moriah Road from general commercial to single-family residential. A hangar lease at Greenwood County Airport is also up for a hearing.

Before the business items, Chairman Theo Lane is set to read a proclamation marking 75 years of service by Self Regional Healthcare, and consultant Raftelis will deliver the final report on the county’s strategic plan. Council will also get a quarterly update on the capital project sales tax.

Residents can send written comments on agenda items to the clerk to council by noon Tuesday, and the meeting will stream on the county’s YouTube channel. Dayne Pruitt serves as the council’s vice chairman.
