William Barry Devore, a dedicated public servant and beloved member of the community, passed away at the age of 63 at his home in Donalds, South Carolina, on July 23, 2025. Devore is remembered as a cherished husband to Tanya McCombs Devore and as a loving father to their three children, Jake, Luci, and Isabel Devore.

Barry Devore was born in Greenwood, SC, and was the son of the late John Newton and Billie Jean Andrews Devore. He was a proud graduate of Dixie High School, where he completed his education in 1979, followed by Lander University, from which he graduated in 1983. His professional life was marked by a commitment to public service as he served as the Finance Director for Abbeville County from October 2006 until retiring in April 2024.

Devore was an active member of Greenville Presbyterian Church, where he engaged with fellow community members and contributed to various church activities. Outside of his professional duties and church engagements, Barry was known for his deep passion for antique vehicles. His unique appreciation for niche and distinctive cars led him to spend countless hours repairing and maintaining these cherished vehicles.

Family and Personal Interests

Gardening was another significant part of Barry’s life, as it reminded him of cherished family moments from his childhood. He took pleasure in the simple joys of everyday life, often referring to this pursuit as “piddling around.” In addition to gardening, Barry enjoyed traveling and had recently acquired an RV with which he looked forward to exploring the United States post-retirement.

Family was at the heart of Barry’s life. He especially treasured the time spent working in the yard with his wife, Tanya. His profound love for music played a vital role in his interactions with loved ones, as he had a knack for selecting the perfect song for every occasion. Known for his sharp wit and playful sarcasm, Barry was a source of laughter and joy for many.

Survived By and Memorial Information

In addition to his wife Tanya, Barry is survived by his son, Jake Devore; daughters, Luci and Isabel Devore; brother, Robert Devore; and sister, Brenda Devore Campbell. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Harris Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 4:00 PM at Greenville Presbyterian Church, located at 205 Greenville Church Rd, Donalds, SC 29638, followed by burial in the church cemetery.
