A tragic incident at a youth softball tournament in Sumter County resulted in the death of 61-year-old umpire Mitchell Huggins, who succumbed to heat stroke. Huggins collapsed on the field during a game, unable to recover despite efforts to cool him down. The extreme heat, with temperatures hitting 91 degrees and field conditions reaching dangerous levels, has sparked increased awareness regarding heat-related hazards during outdoor activities. Friends and family mourn the loss of a dedicated sports advocate, as the community comes together to support his family and honor his legacy.

Sumter County, South Carolina – A tragic incident occurred during a youth softball tournament when 61-year-old umpire Mitchell Huggins died from heat stroke. Huggins collapsed while officiating a game at Patriot Park on Saturday, June 21, and was later pronounced dead at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

According to reports, Huggins was officiating an afternoon game when he first lost consciousness. Although he briefly regained awareness, he ultimately collapsed again. Efforts to cool him down with water were made by witnesses on the field, but unfortunately, they were not enough to save him. The Sumter County Coroner’s Office has stated that the preliminary cause of death was heat stroke, complicated by an underlying heart condition.

The National Weather Service reported that temperatures soared to 91 degrees that day, compounded by high humidity, making the conditions feel even more oppressive. Reports indicate that the artificial turf field where the game took place registered extreme temperatures, climbing as high as 182.5 degrees. The dangerous heat wave currently affecting the Midwest and eastern United States has raised warnings about the risks associated with outdoor activities.

In a broader context, the dangers of extreme heat have become increasingly apparent. Just days prior to Huggins’ death, a woman in Anderson County died from heat exhaustion, marking the first heat-related fatality of the year for that area. Additionally, over 100 individuals required medical treatment for heat-related illnesses during outdoor graduation ceremonies in New Jersey, and several concertgoers experienced heat exhaustion during a K-pop concert in Washington, D.C., which required medical intervention.

The news of Huggins’ death has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends, family, and the local sports community, many of whom remembered him as a passionate advocate for youth sports. Known affectionately as “Mr. Mitch” and “Uncle Mitch,” he was celebrated for his commitment and positive demeanor on and off the field. His contributions to youth sports were well recognized, and his infectious smile had touched many lives.

In response to his passing, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to provide financial support for Huggins’s family and cover funeral expenses. A celebration of his life is set to take place on June 28 at the old Timmonsville High School in Timmonsville, allowing the community to honor his legacy.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the pressing need to recognize the hazards associated with extreme heat, especially for individuals engaged in outdoor activities. With heat waves expected to continue, officials and health experts emphasize the importance of staying hydrated and being aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

The local community continues to rally in support of Huggins’s family during this difficult time, reflecting on the profound impact he had on the lives of many young athletes and their families. As they come together to celebrate his life, the sports community remains united in mourning this significant loss.
