Good Weather, Great Achievements!

In more local news, let’s take a moment to celebrate some amazing students! Currently, the weather in Ware Shoals is a crisp sunny yet cold with a high of 47°F and a low of 24°F expected. Perfect weather to be out recognizing achievements! Wylie McCullough, a third grader from Ware Shoals Primary School, was recently celebrated as the 2025 Ware Shoals School District 51 Spelling Bee Champion. Additionally, Jolene Allen, a seventh grader, took home the title for winning the Ware Shoals Middle School Spelling Bee. What fantastic accomplishments!

Enhancing the Educational Experience

During a recent board meeting, the district superintendent Dan Crockett shared an exciting new mission statement that emphasizes the community’s commitment to excellence and genuine care for its students. The statement reflects the district’s aim: “Ware Shoals School District 51 is a dedicated community that provides a rigorous and well-rounded education, inspiring students to discover their talents and achieve their fullest potential.”

In a heartfelt moment, the board also approved a scholarship, the Evan Bridges Memorial Scholarship, in honor of Evan Bridges, a 2019 graduate who sadly passed away in 2024. This scholarship is aimed at supporting student-athletes and is valued at up to $2,500 for one primary recipient, with two smaller awards available as well. Such a meaningful initiative!

Updates on School Facilities and Curriculum Changes

As part of ongoing improvements, trustees have approved requests for architectural services to design plans for updating Ware Shoals High, Middle, and Primary Schools, plus the baseball stadium. They’ve set aside a budget of up to $15,000 for this, which allows them to bypass a formal bidding process—an efficient move!

In addition, curriculum updates are in the works for Ware Shoals High to align with the new statewide mathematics requirements. Starting next school year, geometry will be the first math course rising ninth graders tackle, replacing Algebra 1. To adapt to the new educational landscape, the credit requirements for advancing students will also increase from five to six credits.

Exciting additions include a marketing course and a dual enrollment horticulture class to enrich the program of studies. Plenty of developments are on the horizon, and community members are encouraged to remain engaged as the school board discusses future projects during the upcoming budget cycle.

With so much happening in Ware Shoals and Greenwood County’s schools, it’s a great time to get involved! Whether you’re interested in running for office, cheering on young scholars, or simply advocating for educational improvements, your voice can make a difference!
