Samuel “Sam” Douglas Loftis, a beloved community leader and family man, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, at the age of 83. He died at the Dr. Robert M. Fales Hospice Pavilion in Wilmington, marking the end of a life devoted to his family, faith, and community service.

Legacy and Contributions

Born on April 17, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, Sam Loftis enjoyed a full and impactful life. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University in 1964 with a degree in engineering, which laid the foundation for a distinguished career marked by a strong work ethic. Sam began his professional journey at Gulf Oil in Houston, Texas, before serving as the President of Neptune Measurement Company in Greenwood, South Carolina. He later became a co-owner of Triple “T” Trucking Brokerage in Temple, Texas, showcasing his versatility and commitment to his work.

Community Involvement

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Sam was a dedicated member of the community and a devout follower of his faith. Although he did not serve in the U.S. Military, his patriotism was evident throughout his life. A faithful member of the Kingdom of God, he actively participated in various churches, most recently at the First Baptist Church in Wilmington, where he was a long-time member of the Wells Sunday School Class and the Men’s Prayer Group.

Sam’s commitment to helping others extended to volunteering for many years at the Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington, where he was known for his selflessness and willingness to support those in need. He was widely regarded as a pillar of strength and a role model for Christian living, always prioritizing the welfare of others.

Family and Survivors

Sam Loftis is survived by his wife, Charlene Danesi Loftis, with whom he shared a loving marriage for 38 years, residing in Leland, North Carolina. He leaves behind a daughter, Julie Thomas, and her husband Greg, of Rocky Point, North Carolina, as well as a sister, Patricia Edwards, living in Texas. His legacy continues through his two grandchildren, Austin Samuel Grabovac and Bradley Scott Thomas, who are residents of North Carolina, along with his great-grandson Palmer Scott Grabovac and another grandchild expected in July.

Sam is also remembered fondly by his sister-in-law, Valerie Gasperini, located in Leland, and by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members across Texas, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As a cherished neighbor, he leaves behind friends including Bob and Jeanne Keil of Leland and best friends Beth and Jerry Jones of Waynesville, North Carolina.

Final Reflections

Sam Loftis was preceded in death by his parents, Jere W. Loftis and Claudia Jones Loftis, and his sister, Geraldine Edwards. In recognition of his life and values, the family encourages memorial donations to Lower Cape Fear Hospice in lieu of flowers, allowing others to benefit from the care that was provided during his time of need.
