Fleming was born on October 10, 1931, in Hemet, California, to the late Eldon and Beatrice Fleming. For many years, he resided in Fallbrook, California, before relocating to McCormick, South Carolina in 2004 with his late wife, Pat Fleming. The move to the Carolinas offered him the tranquility of lake living, which he enjoyed immensely, often spending time swapping stories with neighbors.

During his professional career, Fleming worked as a Department of Industrial Safety Inspector for the State of California. His work ethic and commitment to safety in the workplace were well regarded among colleagues. Following his retirement, he continued to lead an active and fulfilling life, deeply involved in hobbies that spanned from outdoor activities to crafting. His interests included making leather bridles, repairing saddles, crafting wood pens, and collecting antique irons. Richard also had a penchant for classic cinema, particularly enjoying old westerns.

Richard served honorably in the United States Army, an experience that reflected his dedication to service. In 2018, he married Patsy, and together they shared a passion for travel, creating lasting memories during trips to Ireland. This union also brought together two families, with Richard’s children and Patsy’s children all cherishing shared moments.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Fleming; three children, Deborah Taylor, Donna Schoby, and Alex Fleming (Christopher); and a nephew, Gerry (Lori). Richard also leaves behind two grandchildren, George Scott (Ashley) and Tom Scott, along with three great-grandchildren: Andrew, Addyson, and Everett. His blended family further includes Patsy’s children, Joel (Andie) Stephens and Warren Scott Stephens (Amy), whose grandchildren also enriched Richard’s life with their joy and laughter.

Throughout his life, family remained Richard’s most treasured aspect. He revelled in spending quality time with loved ones, sharing stories and building connections that spanned generations. His approachable nature and warm presence deeply impacted his community, where he was known for his kindness and engaging personality. The family also expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood, South Carolina, during his final days.

As a respected figure, Richard’s legacy will undoubtedly continue through his family and friends who were touched by his life. Services to honor his memory and celebrate his life will be scheduled for a later date.
