This incident highlights issues of road safety as the state faces increasing traffic fatalities.

North Carolina Couple Dies in I-95 Crash

A tragic accident on Interstate 95 in South Carolina resulted in the deaths of a Fuquay Varina couple early Tuesday morning. Kyle Greene, aged 32, and his wife, Sara E. Greene, aged 33, were both pronounced dead at the scene, following a severe crash involving their Chevrolet Equinox and a dump truck.

Details of the Incident

The collision occurred around 12:45 a.m. in Orangeburg County, specifically at mile marker 87, which is close to the junction with Interstate 26. According to the Orangeburg County Coroner, Sean Fogle, both vehicles were traveling north when the Chevrolet SUV crashed into the rear of a 1987 dump truck. The precise circumstances leading to the crash, including who was driving the SUV at the time, remain unclear as an investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently underway.

Emergency responders confirmed that both Kyle and Sara Greene suffered multiple blunt force injuries, leading to their immediate fatalities at the scene. A child, who was a back-seat passenger in the SUV, was transported to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia for treatment of undisclosed injuries. At this time, further information about the child’s condition has not been released.

The driver of the dump truck, the sole occupant, was reported to have escaped the incident without any injuries. Fortunately, there were no other injuries reported as a result of this crash. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether any of the individuals involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

Road Safety Statistics

The tragic event occurs amidst ongoing concerns about road safety in South Carolina. In 2025 alone, there have been 270 reported fatalities on the state’s roads. This figure highlights an alarming trend, especially when compared to the total of 948 traffic-related deaths recorded in the state during the previous year. Within Orangeburg County, at least seven fatalities have been reported due to traffic incidents in 2025, while the county recorded 46 deaths in the entirety of 2024.

Community Response

Coroner Sean Fogle extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and emphasized the importance of keeping them in the community’s thoughts and prayers during this profoundly difficult time. The circumstances surrounding this tragedy serve as a reminder of the preciousness of life and the need for increased awareness of road safety.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the factors that contributed to this unfortunate event. The Greene family’s untimely loss sheds light on the critical need for vigilance and safety on the road, underscoring the abrupt turn that life can take due to a momentary lapse on the journey.
