Greenwood – Michael Scott, Sr., a dedicated resident and beloved family man, passed away at the age of 74 on Saturday, May 17, 2025. He was the husband of Donna Quick Scott and a lifelong member of the Greenwood community.

Born in Greenwood, Michael was the son of the late Mack Rayford Scott and Doris McFerrin Scott. He dedicated many years of his life to working in maintenance at Wesley Commons, where he provided essential care and comfort to those in need.

In addition to his professional life, Michael was known for his passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, relishing the simple pleasures of life, especially the time he spent with his family, including his five grandchildren. These cherished moments were a focal point in his life.

Michael is survived by his children: Michael Scurry Scott, Jr. and his wife Melissa; Traci Denise Larkins (Lark); and Brandon Wood and his wife Katie. He is also remembered by his siblings, Brenda Gillespie and Dennis Scott and his wife Kathy. Michael was a proud grandfather to Kacie Scott, Adrianna Wood, Ella Wood, Emma Wood, and Sterling Wood.

Graveside services for Michael Scott were conducted on Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Friends and family were invited to send messages and photos to the family through the designated funeral home website. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Hospice House at 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646, or to the Greenwood Humane Society at PO Box 49776, Greenwood, SC 29649.

In a related note, on Friday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a weather alert for strong thunderstorms affecting Greenwood County. The alert, issued at 3:21 a.m., warned residents of thunderstorms expected to bring wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail.

At the time of the alert, a significant thunderstorm was detected moving northeast at approximately 30 mph, located 8 miles south of Greenwood. Areas impacted by the storm included Lake Greenwood State Park, Bradley, Greenwood, and Ninety Six Historic Site. The strong thunderstorm alert remained in effect until 3:45 a.m.

During the storm, residents were advised to seek shelter indoors to avoid dangers associated with lightning and other hazards. The NWS reported that around 25 million lightning strikes occur annually in the United States, leading to about 20 fatalities each year.

The NWS also provided safety tips during thunderstorms, which included finding solid shelter and steering clear of outdoor activities near water. Additionally, there are concerns about hydroplaning during heavy rainfall, and safe driving tips were recommended to help prevent accidents. Drivers were advised to maintain a safe following distance, reduce their speed, and activate their headlights during rain.

Overall, the passing of Michael Scott marks a profound loss for the Greenwood community, reflecting the love and dedication he demonstrated in both his personal and professional life. His contributions to the well-being of others and his cherished memories with family will be fondly remembered.
