Born on October 2, 1945, in Marianna, Florida, Gloria built a distinguished career over 35 years in the banking industry. She worked for prominent financial institutions, including First National Bank of South Carolina, Wachovia, and Wells Fargo Bank. Gloria retired as Vice President from Wells Fargo in Beaufort, South Carolina, and continued to contribute her expertise by serving as a New Business Development Manager at Palmetto State Bank for an additional five years.
Gloria was not just known for her professional accomplishments; she was also deeply dedicated to her community. A devout member of Faith Church in Walterboro and The Baptist Church of Beaufort, she spent her time volunteering and making a positive impact. Gloria was involved in various organizations, such as the Civitan’s Club of Walterboro and the Beaufort Rotary Club, and was an active member of the Beaufort Shag Club. Her commitment to community service extended to volunteering at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where she touched the lives of many through her compassion and care.
Family was central to Gloria’s life. She was married to her husband, Jim Godwin, for sixty-three years. Together, they raised three sons: Steve, married to Robin and residing in O’Fallon, Illinois; Greg, married to Jan and living in Walterboro, South Carolina; and Tim, married to Allye and located in Greenwood, South Carolina. Gloria also took great joy in her role as a grandmother to several grandchildren: Leslie Garlich (Derek), Lauren Schiefer (Jared), Stacy Minton (Neil), Will, Josh, and Luke Godwin. In addition, she was a proud great-grandmother to Riley Minton, Lola Grace Minton, and Jenna Schiefer.
Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy and Beulah Perkins, along with her siblings: Marshia Shoupe, Myrthal Gilbert, Mozell Wilcox, Lyvonne Nichols, and Lydon Perkins. Her passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Private memorial services will be held later in Walterboro, attended by family members. To honor her memory, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Faith Church in Walterboro, South Carolina. Donations can be made online at the church’s website.
Arrangements have been entrusted to The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes and Crematory, Walterboro Chapel. Gloria’s contributions to both her family and her community will be remembered fondly, and she will be greatly missed by all.
