Exciting Events Unfold at Lander University in Greenwood

Greenwood is abuzz with excitement as Lander University recently kicked off its spring semester with some thrilling events! On February 25 at 7 p.m., the university hosted its first Wind Ensemble concert of the semester. Held at the lovely Abney Cultural Center Auditorium, the event was free and open to all, proving to be a delightful evening for both music enthusiasts and casual attendees alike.

Music Under the Stars: A Heavenly Theme

For this concert, the theme revolved around the heavens and the sky. Attendees were treated to enchanting compositions created by renowned composers. The ensemble dazzled the audience with standout pieces such as “Flight” by Idio, “Sky is Waiting” by Hazo, and the iconic “Star Wars” score by John Williams. It was a night to remember as the music transported listeners into celestial realms!

The talented musicians of the Lander University Wind Ensemble—known as the premier instrumental concert ensemble at the university—were under the expert direction of Dr. Reed Gallo. Deeply committed to music education, Dr. Gallo also serves as the chair of the Department of Music, director of bands, and a trumpet professor. With a rich background as a performer and educator, Dr. Gallo’s passion for music shone brightly throughout the evening.

This award serves to acknowledge significant contributions and impactful leadership at the university.

A Dedication to Education and Community

Duncan wears many hats, acting as a staff writer and project coordinator for the Office of University Relations and also serving as an English instructor. His dedication to excellence has not gone unnoticed, as he has greatly contributed to enhancing the university’s visibility beyond local boundaries. The award not only recognizes his efforts but also comes with a $1,000 honorarium!

The Mary Frances Poole Alston Award, established by Rowland P. Alston in memory of his grandmother who graduated from Lander in 1914, honors individuals who make significant impacts on both the university and its community. Duncan’s leadership qualities and professionalism were illustrated in the selection process, showcasing why he’s well-deserved of this honor.

A Scholar and Leader

A graduate of Lander with a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s from Converse College, Duncan holds a wealth of knowledge and experience. He previously participated in Lander’s Kauffmann Leadership Institute and teaches various courses including Writing and Inquiry, Introduction to Literature, and PR Communications, all while making presentations on creative writing and education topics at a national level.

Beyond the classroom, Duncan has actively engaged in university life by serving on the Lander University Staff Senate and mentoring students as an advisor for the True Crime Club. His contributions extend to the community as well where he has served as a commissioner for the Joint Planning Commission of Greenwood County.

Recognition and Achievements

Additionally, his hard work and dedication have paved the way for numerous accolades, including being named Part-Time Faculty Member of the Year for Lander’s College of Arts and Humanities in 2024, and recipient of Lander’s Staff Excellence Award. The Commonwealth of Kentucky even recognized him as a Kentucky Colonel in 2021 for his community service efforts. Duncan truly embodies the spirit of lifelong learning and making meaningful connections.

With such events and outstanding individuals, it’s clear that Lander University is not only a hub of academic excellence but also a vibrant community that fosters growth and learning. Here’s to many more amazing moments on this campus!
