James Frederic Ellis, known as Jim, passed away on May 21, 2025, at Augusta University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. He was 85 years old. Jim Ellis is survived by his wife, Dana Sanborn (Glen) Ellis, and his two daughters, Alexandra S. Ellis and Elizabeth H. Ellis. He was also survived by his brothers Jon (Brenda) Ellis and Jeffrey (Carol) Ellis, and was preceded in death by his parents, James Oldham Ellis and Helen Elizabeth (Glauner) Ellis, as well as his brother Joel Ellis from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Born on April 23, 1940, at Mitchel Field, New York, Jim graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1963 to 1973, achieving the rank of Captain. During his military career, he was a flight officer piloting F-4 Phantoms in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966, where he dedicated himself to serving his country at a time of conflict.
Following his tenure in the Marine Corps, Jim pursued further education, earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Bryant University. His professional career included significant contributions in the field of Logistics, which took him to various locations including Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New York, and eventually South Carolina, where he retired.
In addition to his professional achievements, Jim was deeply engaged in community service. While residing in Portsmouth, he was an active member of Rotary International and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. He dedicated much of his time to service-oriented projects and initiatives, underlining his commitment to making a positive impact on those around him.
Outside of his professional and community commitments, Jim had diverse personal interests. He was a life-long enthusiast for collecting stamps and coins. His passion for the outdoors was evident in his enjoyment of activities such as hunting and fishing. Additionally, he was an avid reader, with a particular fondness for science fiction, and held a deep love for animals of all kinds.
Jim Ellis’s passing has left a void in both his family and the community he served. As a personal tribute to his love for animals, the family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Potter League for Animals in Middletown, Rhode Island. The obituary detailing his life was published online on May 28, 2025, and has since reached many who knew and admired him.
James Frederic Ellis will be remembered not only for his military service and business accomplishments but also for his dedication to community service and personal passions. His legacy reflects the values of commitment, leadership, and love for family and community.
