Greenwood City Council Approves Zoning Amendments for Temporary Housing

Temporary housing options in Greenwood with RVs in a neighborhood

News Summary

The Greenwood City Council has approved an amendment to allow temporary emergency housing for residents affected by Hurricane Helene. This decision permits residents to use RVs or campers on their property as they work on home repairs, while also introducing new flexibility for housing options in the city. Additionally, a police report and community updates highlighted ongoing safety efforts and upcoming events.

Exciting News in Greenwood: Zoning Amendments for Temporary Housing Bring Hope!

In a recent gathering filled with optimism and community spirit, the Greenwood City Council made an important decision that is sure to bring relief to many residents still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The council voted to approve an amendment to the zoning ordinance, allowing for temporary emergency housing for those in need of repairs to their homes. This amendment extends the grace period for temporary housing options, which will now stay in place until December 31.

Whatโ€™s New for Residents?

For residents still grappling with the necessary home repairs, the amendment brings some welcome news. Now, those impacted can use recreational vehicles (RVs) or campers right on their property while they work to make their homes safe again. However, there are a few requirements to keep in mind:

  • The RV or camper must be parked on the same piece of land that has been damaged by the hurricane.
  • Residents need to apply for the appropriate building permits within 60 days of the amendmentโ€™s approval.
  • Repairs on the damaged home have to kick off within 90 days of receiving the permit.
  • Once the repairs are completed and the home is certified safe for living, residents have 30 days to relocate back into their permanent home.

Community Safety Update from Police Chief

Greenwood Police Chief T.J. Chaudoin provided an overview of his annual report for 2024. The statistics show that there were a total of 35,011 calls received for service this past year. While that number represents a slight decline from 2023, itโ€™s actually an increase compared to 2022.

Crime Statistics Overview

Delving into the numbers, there were some noticeable shifts in crime statistics worth discussing:

  • Homicides saw a reduction of 20%, going from four to three.
  • Robberies experienced an increase of 19%.
  • Assaults dropped significantly by 22%.
  • Burglaries rose by 13%.
  • All theft occurrences decreased by 11%.
  • There were 120 DUI arrests for the year, with July being the most active month.
  • Only 0.3% of calls faced resistance from individuals.
  • Interestingly, 76% of incidents were resolved without the need for physical force.
  • Lastly, there were 36 car pursuits, mostly happening during nighttime hours.

New Housing Flexibility on the Horizon

In an effort to bolster housing options, Planning Director Carol Coleman introduced two ordinance amendments allowing for duplexes in both Institutional Professional (IP) and Office Professional (OP) zoning districts. This move is meant to enhance housing flexibility in the areas surrounding Lander University and the local hospital while also legitimatizing existing non-conforming duplexes.

Excitingly, the council approved both readings of these amendments, reflecting their commitment to fostering diverse housing opportunities.

Waller Avenue Celebrations Await
