News Summary

Greenwood County has declared June as Zero Tolerance for Litter Month, promoting strict litter enforcement measures and educational initiatives. Fines up to $1,000 and incarceration for violators are included in the new policy. The county aims to reduce roadside litter through community engagement, including tarp giveaways and organized cleanups, with strong emphasis on securing loads and preventing illegal dumping. Local residents are encouraged to take part in these efforts to foster a cleaner environment.

Greenwood, South Carolina – In June 2025, Greenwood County joins forces with the state in designating June as Zero Tolerance for Litter Month, ramping up efforts to combat litter through enhanced education and strict enforcement strategies. County officials are implementing measures that include fines up to $1,000 and possible jail time for individuals who violate littering laws.

As part of this initiative, over 160 free tarps were distributed during a giveaway event at the Bucklevel Road Convenience Center. These tarps are intended to prevent litter caused by unsecured loads, aligning with the county’s Secure Your Load campaign, which is a collaborative effort with PalmettoPride, a nonprofit organization aimed at promoting litter prevention throughout South Carolina.

The tarp giveaway was significant, as more than 160 tarps were shared across nine convenience centers in Greenwood County during the recent event. The county’s concerted outreach efforts also extend to guided community cleanups, with one of the first events— the District 3 cleanup— successfully occurring on June 14. Such events are crucial for involving local residents in the fight against litter.

Litter Prevention Coordinator Amber Nappier has highlighted the ongoing need for a clean and safe environment in Greenwood County. Community involvement and education about the dangers of littering and illegal dumping have been essential aspects of the initiative. Local officials encourage citizens to report any illegal dumping incidents, providing them with guidelines on safely documenting these occurrences to aid law enforcement in tracking down offenders.

According to the guidelines issued by the county, state law outlines specific penalties for littering based on the weight of discarded waste. Unsecured loads contribute significantly to roadside litter, with statistics revealing that they are responsible for 20% of litter found along highways, adversely impacting waterways and posing risks for traffic accidents nationwide.

Engagement within the community has reached new levels as volunteers have come together under the moniker “Litter Warriors”, working alongside local service groups to promote cleaner surroundings. The Greenwood County Council, led by Chairman Theo Lane, has taken an active role in the anti-litter campaigns, frequently participating in community outreach events to reinforce the importance of litter prevention.

Residents are urged to take personal responsibility for their waste disposal practices. The county has provided clear information on disposal options and encourages the public to reach out to local officials whenever they need assistance with proper trash disposal methods.

Looking ahead, another major community cleanup event is planned prior to the Festival of Discovery, set to take place from July 10-12. This upcoming event exemplifies the ongoing commitment of Greenwood County leaders and residents to create a cleaner and healthier environment for all community members.

The proactive stance taken by Greenwood County during this month of litter awareness reinforces not only local pride but also a collective responsibility towards maintaining the natural beauty and safety of the region.
