Goodwin, who will start on July 1, brings extensive experience from his previous role in Frederick County, Virginia. The board also plans to address a budget shortfall and enhance the gifted and talented program in the upcoming school year, while focusing on innovative leadership and community engagement.
Greenwood, South Carolina – The Greenwood County School District 50 Board announced the appointment of Shane Goodwin as the new superintendent during a special meeting on Monday evening. The board voted unanimously to select Goodwin after a comprehensive search process that lasted several months.
Goodwin will officially begin his role on July 1, 2025, succeeding the previous superintendent. He comes to Greenwood County from Frederick County Public Schools in Winchester, Virginia, where he served as the assistant superintendent for administration. In this capacity, he managed various departments such as human resources, facilities, technology, school safety, transportation, nutrition services, and planning and construction.
Expressing appreciation for the opportunity, Goodwin looks forward to serving the district and becoming an integral part of the Greenwood community alongside his wife, Christy Goodwin. Board member Danielle Fields has commended Goodwin’s leadership style, highlighting his commitment to transparency and accountability.
As the board moves forward, they are also preparing for their June 23 meeting to address the proposed budget for the 2025-26 school year. The district currently faces a $2.5 million budget shortfall primarily due to the expiration of federal ESSER funds and a decline in student enrollment. Rodney Smith, the assistant superintendent for business, indicated that the revised budget proposal aims to minimize cuts to classroom resources while exploring creative solutions to address the financial challenges, including potential assistance from local industries.
In related budget discussions, the board announced adjustments to the gifted and talented program for the upcoming school year. Changes include an increase in instruction time for gifted students, ensuring they receive 225 minutes of gifted instruction each week, integrated into their regular school day. Previously, instruction time varied by grade, with third graders receiving 125 minutes and fourth and fifth graders getting 200 minutes weekly.
Alyson Perrin, the executive director of elementary education, will serve as the board’s superintendent liaison until June 30. The board’s ongoing dialogue around budget planning will focus on ensuring sufficient revenue to meet anticipated expenditures while supporting educational quality across the district.
Greenwood County School District 50’s decision to appoint Goodwin marks a new chapter for the district, with expectations for innovative leadership and community engagement. As budget discussions continue, the focus will remain on prioritizing student education even amid financial constraints.
