The Greenwood County Recreation Complex has officially opened after a $13 million renovation, providing an enhanced community and sports hub. With new amenities including artificial turf fields and an inclusive playground, the complex aims to promote health, fitness, and family engagement. The facility will host youth programs and tournaments, contributing positively to the local economy and community well-being.

Greenwood – The Greenwood County Recreation Complex celebrated its grand opening on June 7, 2025, marking the completion of a significant $13 million renovation project. The newly transformed facility, now spanning 80 acres, is set to become a vital community and sports hub for local residents and visitors alike.

The grand opening featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Councilman Robbie Templeton, who highlighted the complex’s extensive upgrades. The facility now boasts state-of-the-art amenities, including new artificial turf fields that can accommodate football, soccer, and rugby, along with resurfaced tennis and pickleball courts.

Other improvements to the complex include baseball and softball diamonds, a walking trail, and an engaging disc golf course. A key addition to the recreation area is an inclusive playground designed specifically for children with mobility and sensory needs, featuring accessible swings and a zip track, ensuring that all children in the community can enjoy outdoor activities.

Since its opening, the complex has introduced a range of youth programs and actively hosts team tournaments, which has significantly increased foot traffic. The SPIKES Baseball and Softball Camp, founded by a local entrepreneur, has already begun utilizing the new facilities, providing coaching and competitive opportunities for kids from Greenwood and surrounding regions.

Participation in youth programs is thriving, as evidenced by the experiences shared by campers. For instance, a ten-year-old involved in the Greenwood Tennis Clinic Camp expressed her enjoyment and eagerness to return for more sessions. The facility is considered a safe and welcoming space for families, with many community members voicing their approval of the renovations and offerings.

The renovations to the complex were made possible through funding from the 2016 Capital Project Sales Tax, which ensured that the community could benefit from upgraded recreational facilities. Furthermore, the planning for Phase Two of the project has already begun. This next phase will introduce a $17 million indoor facility to support basketball and volleyball, along with programming for seniors, with construction anticipated to start in fall 2031.

The complex aims to host additional events and tournaments, which are estimated to contribute around $1.5 million to the local economy. Interest from travel teams outside the region has also been reported, highlighting the appeal and potential of the new venue.

In addition to planned tournaments, multiple community sports clinics and activities have been organized. These include junior tennis sessions funded by a grant from the United States Tennis Association, demonstrating a continued commitment to enhancing community engagement and participation.

Requests for facility rentals and organized programs have been on the rise as the summer progresses, indicating a positive response to the new recreational opportunities available. Overall, the Greenwood County Recreation Complex reflects a significant investment in community health, fitness, and togetherness, promoting an active lifestyle among residents of all ages.
