Columbia, South Carolina — Free Courtesy Boat Inspections Set for Memorial Day Weekend

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is offering complimentary courtesy boat inspections across the state this Memorial Day weekend, from May 24 through May 26, 2024. The initiative is designed to ensure that all boats are equipped with the necessary safety gear and possess valid registrations, promoting safe boating practices among residents and visitors alike.

Boat owners will have the opportunity to address any compliance issues found during the inspections without facing fines or tickets. This proactive approach allows boaters to rectify any deficiencies before launching their vessels into the water. Inspections will be held from 10 a.m. to noon each day at designated locations throughout South Carolina.

Inspection Schedule and Locations

The SCDNR has outlined specific locations and dates for boat inspections:

  • Saturday, May 24:

Safety and Reporting Violations

In addition to inspections, SCDNR boating officers will be present to answer questions and provide vital safety tips to boaters. The department also encourages the public to assist in maintaining safe boating conditions by reporting any violations, such as reckless operation or intoxicated operators, by calling their toll-free hotline at 1-800-922-5431 or by using the #DNR code on a cell phone.

Background on Boating Safety in South Carolina

As South Carolina looks forward to an increase in boating activity during the summer months, SCDNR’s courtesy inspections serve as an essential resource for boaters. These inspections are in line with the state’s commitment to safeguarding both residents and tourists. Memorial Day weekend is often considered the unofficial start of the summer boating season, making these inspections a timely initiative to promote safety awareness.

South Carolina’s lakes and waterways attract a wide range of recreational boaters, from families enjoying leisurely outings to avid anglers pursuing their favorite fish species. Given the diverse activity on the water, ensuring compliance with safety regulations is critical for preventing accidents and preserving the enjoyment of outdoor recreational spaces.

By providing these complimentary inspections, the SCDNR not only reinforces the importance of safety on the water but also fosters a cooperative spirit among boaters, helping to create a safer and more enjoyable environment for everyone involved in the state’s vibrant boating community.
