JOANNA, SC – The community is mourning the loss of John Edward Phillips, who passed away on June 20, 2025, at the age of 81. A long-time resident of Joanna, Phillips was known for his incredible dedication to family, faith, and his work.
Born on March 10, 1944, in Greenville, SC, Phillips was the son of the late Ray and Janie Rowland Phillips. He dedicated 40 years of his life to the Torrington Company in Clinton, SC, before retiring. His commitment to his job was characterized by a strong work ethic and responsibility, traits that earned him respect from colleagues and peers alike.
Phillips was a devoted member of the Joanna Church of God, where he nurtured his steadfast Christian faith. He was well-regarded in his community for being humble, sincere, and respectful. Friends and family described him as thoughtful and straightforward, reflecting a nature that was approachable and friendly to all who met him.
John Phillips leaves behind a loving family. He was married to his wife, Jeanette, for 61 years. Together, they raised two children: Kenneth “Ken” Phillips of Joanna and Cheryl Gurney, who resides in Greenwood with her husband Derek. The couple was proud grandparents to two granddaughters—Lacey Gurney of Greenwood and Kayla Hoxworth, who lives in Evans, GA. In addition, they cherished their four great-grandchildren: Alexander, Landon, Elizabeth, and Owen Hoxworth, all from Evans, GA.
Phillips is survived by his siblings, including sisters Joann Bryant (Ted) of Latta and Kathy Jones (Mike) of New Bern, NC, and brothers Harold Phillips (Vicki) of Spartanburg and David Phillips (Marsha) of New Bern, NC. He was predeceased by his sister Faye Edwards and brothers Carroll Phillips and Clint Phillips, which leaves a void in the hearts of many family members.
The family expressed their gratitude to the staff at VIA Health Partners of Clinton for the compassionate care provided during Phillips’s illness. Their support was a source of comfort to the family during this difficult time.
Funeral services for John Edward Phillips are scheduled to take place on June 28, 2025, at Joanna Church of God, beginning at 2:00 PM. The service will be officiated by Pastor Gene Wooten and Rev. Stacey Strickland. Following the service, cremation will take place. Before the service, family members will welcome visitors from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the church, allowing the community to come together and remember Phillips’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Joanna Church of God or to VIA Health Partners, supporting the ongoing care of the community that Phillips valued throughout his life. His impact on his family and community will be remembered, serving as a testament to a life lived with purpose and connection.
