Fatal Boating Collision on Lake Greenwood

Lake Greenwood, South Carolina — A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged with Felony Boating Under the Influence (BUI) following a tragic boating collision that resulted in the deaths of two young adults early Sunday morning, July 6, 2025. The incident occurred around 1:42 a.m. near Harris Landing on Lake Greenwood.

The operator of the Yamaha boat has been identified as Allen Sidney Benware Jr. III. He faces two counts of felony charges related to the incident. Reports indicate that his boat, occupied by two individuals, collided with an Alumacraft jon boat that was carrying five passengers.

Unfortunately, the crash resulted in the fatalities of two passengers from the Alumacraft: Thomas Chandler Davis and Abby Katherine Davis, both aged 23 and residents of Laurens. In addition to the fatalities, another female passenger from the Alumacraft was ejected but was quickly rescued and did not suffer serious injuries. Another passenger from the same boat suffered injuries that necessitated hospitalization but has since been released.

At the time of the collision, the Alumacraft was confirmed to have fully functioning navigation lights. This fact is critical, considering that the officers who witnessed the incident were conducting proactive safety operations and had intended to stop the Yamaha boat due to suspicions regarding its navigation lights.

After the collision, responding officers began providing life-saving aid immediately and managed to apprehend Benware to prevent him from fleeing the scene. His actions on the water are now the focus of a thorough investigation being led by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). This investigation includes interviewing witnesses and reconstructing the timeline of events, along with securing both boats as evidence.
