Laurel, Mississippi – Betty Jean Neel Spears, a beloved figure known for her dedication to service and family, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on July 16, 2025. She died at Lynnwood Senior Care Home in Laurel after a prolonged illness.

Betty was born on February 26, 1931, in Martin, Tennessee, the eldest child of Mattie Lee Greer Neel and William Franklin Neel. Raised in Martin, she graduated from Martin High School before pursuing her education at the University of Tennessee Junior College in Martin. Betty earned a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics, later continuing her studies to obtain a degree in Social Work in Memphis, Tennessee.

Throughout her career, Betty committed herself to helping vulnerable children, working for the Weakley County Human Services Department in Dresden and later in Obion and Lake Counties. Known for her deep compassion and quiet strength, she served as a supervisor, guiding and supporting the needs of children and families in her care.

On December 23, 1961, Betty married Joe H. Spears from Greenfield, Tennessee. The couple built a life marked by unwavering devotion, raising their daughter Jeannine together. Due to Joe’s engineering career, the family relocated several times, living in Nashville, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Columbia, Union City, and eventually settling in Greenwood. After Joe’s retirement, they moved to Laurel, where they became part of a close-knit community.

Betty was widely known for her ability to connect with people. Friends and family described her as genuine, thoughtful, and fiercely loyal. She maintained lifelong friendships and cherished the everyday moments spent with loved ones. A particularly memorable experience for Betty involved reuniting with two teenage brothers whom she had helped place with family; she fondly remembered a lamp crafted by one of them as a lasting gift of gratitude.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Joe Spears, her parents, her brother Tommy Neel, her sister Shirley Roberson, and her nephews. She is survived by her daughter Jeannine Howell and son-in-law Lowell Howell, grandson Mason Howell and wife Rachael, granddaughter Haven Howell and fiancé Dan Salvador, nephew Landon Roberson, and her son-in-law’s mother Mary Nell Howell.

The family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Lynnwood Senior Care Home, as well as to Comfort Care Hospice, for their support and care during Betty’s final days.

Funeral services for Betty Spears are scheduled for July 20, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Laurel. Visitation will begin at 1:30 PM, followed by the service at 2:30 PM, officiated by Brother Shannon Slover. Interment will take place at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice to honor Betty’s lifelong commitment to helping others.
