News Summary

The Arkansas Tech men’s basketball program has appointed Harrison Burton as its new assistant coach. With a successful coaching background including achievements at Lincoln Memorial University, Burton is expected to enhance the team’s competitiveness and performance. He aims to attract high-caliber players and build upon the program’s momentum for the upcoming seasons.

Russellville, Arkansas – The Arkansas Tech men’s basketball program has announced the hiring of Harrison Burton as its new assistant coach, according to head coach Mark Downey. This addition is seen as a significant step for the program, which looks to enhance its competitiveness and overall performance in the upcoming seasons.

Burton joins the Arkansas Tech coaching staff after a highly successful tenure at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) in Harrogate, Tennessee. Over two years at LMU, Burton played a pivotal role in the team’s achievements, including winning two South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular-season championships. His collaborative efforts with the coaching staff contributed to impressive statistics, including a stellar overall record of 49-15 and a conference play record of 37-7.

During his coaching stint at LMU, Burton served as both the recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator. His strategies helped the Railsplitters achieve remarkable team performance metrics, such as a fifth-ranked offense in NCAA Division II for overall field goal percentage at 51.3% and an effective field goal percentage of 58.2%. Additionally, the team averaged 84.3 points per game, ranking notably in free throws made per game and assist-to-turnover ratio, highlighting the effectiveness of Burton’s offensive schemes.

Prior to his appointment as a full-time assistant coach at LMU, Burton was instrumental as a graduate assistant from 2019 to 2021. During that time, he was part of a remarkable season in 2019-20, where the team posted a fantastic 32-1 record before the season was abruptly halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following this, his contributions were fundamental during the 2020-21 season, which saw LMU advance to the NCAA DII Final Four.

Before joining LMU, Burton held an assistant coaching position at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina, where he also served as the recruiting coordinator. His efforts there helped lead the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018-19, showcasing the impact of his recruiting strategies and program management skills. Under his guidance, Lander ranked highly in various statistical categories in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC), including overall defense and assist-to-turnover ratio.

Burton also brings with him experience at the Division I level, having worked as a video coordinator at Indiana State University. His varied background and proven ability to build winning programs are seen as assets that will enhance the Arkansas Tech men’s basketball team.

Coach Downey has expressed confidence in Burton’s ability to attract high-caliber players to Arkansas Tech. Burton’s past success and character are anticipated to drive the program forward as they aim for new heights. The Arkansas Tech community and basketball fan base eagerly await the contributions he will bring to the team.

Burton has conveyed his excitement about joining the program, expressing gratitude to Coach Downey for the opportunity and his commitment to help the team grow and continue building on their momentum. As the Arkansas Tech men’s basketball team prepares for the upcoming season, the addition of Harrison Burton marks a dynamic change that could lead to promising results.
