SAN JOSE, Calif. — New Mexico survived three turnovers and kept San Jose State out of the end zone on offense all afternoon, winning 21-16 on Saturday to stay unbeaten in Mountain West play.
Scottre Humphrey ran in two first-half touchdowns, the first a 1-yard plunge on fourth down and the second from close range, to put the Lobos up 14-3. Quarterback Toa Fa’avae later hit tight end Cade Keith for a 20-yard score in the third quarter that made it 21-9.
The Spartans got their points from three Trajan Sinatra field goals and an 89-yard interception return by Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa. Twice before halftime, San Jose State set up inside the Lobos 15 after picks and came away with only field goals.
The finish came down to the final seconds. San Jose State reached the New Mexico 34 late, but Austin Brawley sealed it by intercepting Luke Weaver at the goal line, leaving 11 seconds on the clock.
The Lobos are now 7-1, including 4-0 against league foes. The Spartans dropped to 4-5, with a 2-3 record in conference. The Lobos also won in San Jose for the first time since 1969.
