GREENWOOD, S.C. — Shoppers and food truck fans can help Greenwood County’s outdoor cats on Saturday, Oct. 24, when a Community Unity Festival sets up at the Greenwood County Farmers’ Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Money raised goes to the Humane Society of Greenwood fund that pays for trapping, sterilizing and returning feral cats. Vendors and food trucks are lined up for the four-hour event.
The program follows a method known as trap-neuter-return. Volunteers catch free-roaming cats in humane traps and take them to a clinic, where each one is spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies and FVRCP, and given a clipped ear so caretakers can spot it later. The cats then go back to the spot where they were found.
Kittens and friendly strays picked up along the way can move to foster homes or adoption when space allows, and cats from unsafe locations may be placed through a barn cat program.
The society’s community cat brochure puts the county’s population of free-roaming cats at 11,000 or more, and argues the approach costs taxpayers about 30 percent less than trapping, sheltering and euthanizing them. Its low-cost spay and neuter clinic is on Airport Road.
