GREENWOOD, S.C. — Emerald’s boys volleyball team finally has a playoff win to its name. The seventh-seeded Vikings swept No. 10 Airport 3-0 on their home court in Greenwood on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Class 4A Upper State bracket.
Emerald was hosting a first-round match for a second year in a row and had never won a postseason match before. The sweep lifts the Vikings to 10-5, with a 6-4 mark at home. Airport, from West Columbia, ends its season at 7-11.
Emerald came in battle-tested. It split two meetings with T.L. Hanna, winning 3-1 in early September before a 3-2 loss on Oct. 1, and it beat crosstown rival Greenwood High three times.
Next up is No. 2 seed Indian Land, which had a first-round bye. The Class 4A boys title match is set for Oct. 31 at Lexington High School. The Emerald girls start their own playoff run this week.
