GREENWOOD, S.C. — Two Greenwood church choirs, a joint handbell group and a full brass ensemble will lead a free evening of sacred music Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection on Main Street South.
The 7 p.m. hymn festival pairs the adult choirs of Resurrection and Immanuel Lutheran Church. The program mixes choir anthems and handbell pieces with hymns the audience is invited to sing along with.
Will Cleveland is organizing the evening. Douglas-Jayd Burn, who earned a University of Arizona doctorate in piano performance, will play organ as a guest, and Keith Jameson, music director at First Baptist Church of Greenwood, will be the guest conductor. Jameson, a Furman University and Eastman School of Music graduate who spent more than 25 years singing opera and musical theater professionally, will conduct an arrangement he wrote of The Church’s One Foundation.
The concert comes just ahead of Reformation Sunday, which Protestant liturgical churches observe on the final Sunday of October. Church choirs trace back to the fourth century, long before the Reformation, while handbell choirs are a much newer tradition that began in the 1940s.
Admission costs nothing, and Resurrection is hosting a free reception in Emmaus Hall once the program ends. The church is at 700 Main St. South.
