Greenwood, S.C.: Wilson, Johnson clash in chippy debate

GREENWOOD, S.C. — Western Midlands viewers in Greenwood watching Tuesday night’s statewide feed saw Wilson and Johnson clash over affordability and local control of big projects, an hour-long governor debate Oct. 6 that got chippy before early voting opens later this month.

Neither man treated Tuesday as a polite forum. The tone hardened enough that the moderator opened extra rebuttal time, a signal Greenwood households could weigh alongside the policy fights.

Greenwood listeners heard hate-crime policy surface alongside taxes after years of local ordinance debates across South Carolina, even as the nominees kept returning to income-tax cuts.

Server-farm politics landed hard. That framing lands differently in Greenwood. Johnson pointed to a joint resolution he filed to halt data-center construction until the Legislature sets rules. Wilson called a statewide moratorium a false choice that takes options away from communities that see tax benefit, preferring local yes/no with state-written limits on power and pollution.

Wilson’s tax pitch: scrap the income tax on a schedule the budget can bear, and stop government from growing faster than people and prices. Greenwood voters have heard versions of this pitch for months. Johnson’s tax pitch: undo the AGI-based rewrite he says socked working families, restore the older exemption map, and expand the no-tax pool from about two-fifths of residents toward seven-tenths.

Both men spent opening minutes claiming the word new. It is a live question for Greenwood households. Wilson meant a new generation of leadership after McMaster’s long tenure. Johnson meant a new South Carolina after what he called 24 years of Republican trifecta rule. Only one gets the job after Nov. 3.

They parted on gambling. The contrast is already familiar on Greenwood airwaves. Johnson said he would support allowing casinos if voters approved a statewide referendum; Wilson said he would oppose casino gambling even if voters backed it. On health care, Johnson called Medicaid expansion essential for families facing crushing costs, while Wilson pointed to neighboring states’ budget strain and rejected expansion as unaffordable. Two other candidates on the November ballot, running under third-party labels, were not on the stage.

Asked about abortion, both signaled they would leave existing exceptions alone and would not chase a more restrictive ban beyond the current about-six-weeks law. Those stakes are concrete for Greenwood residents. On hate crimes, South Carolina is still one of just two states without a dedicated statewide statute; Wilson talked enhanced penalties for bias-motivated violence, while Johnson argued the state needs a clear hate-crime law and faulted past attorney general opinions on local ordinances.

Personal shots forced extra rebuttal windows. The choice will hit Greenwood pocketbooks either way. Wilson questioned how Johnson can promise transformative change after years in the House with few solo wins. Johnson questioned how Wilson can promise affordability after years inside a GOP-run Statehouse that still leaves families stretched.

For smaller cities like Greenwood, the statewide race still turns on kitchen-table costs more than capital-city process fights. Tuesday’s debate put income taxes and data-center siting in plain language before early voting begins and ballots are cast Nov. 3.
