Abbeville, SC – A flood advisory has been issued for Abbeville and Greenwood counties due to heavy rainfall, effective from 4:06 a.m. on Tuesday until 7 a.m. The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg indicated that the region is expected to experience nuisance flooding resulting from intense rainfall.

According to the NWS, minor flooding is forecasted, particularly in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage, especially in urban settings. Rapid water rises and swift flows are anticipated along nearby creeks, including Park Creek and Long Cane Creek, prompting officials to warn residents to remain vigilant.

Residents are urged to exercise caution during nighttime hours, as it becomes harder to identify flooding hazards. For those living in flood-prone areas, immediate action is recommended—residents should seek higher ground without delay. Evacuation instructions from local authorities should be followed promptly, and if time allows, residents should secure their homes and disconnect utilities before leaving.

Entering basements or rooms where electrical outlets may be submerged is discouraged. Those who experience sparks or hear unusual sounds are advised to evacuate immediately. The NWS has also highlighted the dangers associated with entering electrified waters and stresses that walking through floodwaters should be avoided. Just six inches of moving water can sweep an adult off their feet, increasing the risk to those outdoors during flooding events.

If individuals find themselves trapped by swift water, they should move to the highest elevation and contact emergency services or dial 911 for assistance. The risk of flooding is notably heightened during intense rainfall periods, particularly in vulnerable low-lying regions.

Motorists are warned against driving through flooded roads, as most vehicles can be swept away by just 12 inches of rushing water. Additionally, hydroplaning poses a significant risk when vehicles lose control on water-logged surfaces. Contributing factors, such as speed, tire type, and road conditions, play a key role in the risk of hydroplaning.

A flash flood warning has been activated for Eastern Abbeville County and Northwestern Greenwood County, lasting until 9:15 a.m. EDT. Doppler radar observations at 6:11 a.m. EDT revealed significant rainfall, indicating that an estimated 2 to 3.5 inches of rain has fallen since 3 a.m. An additional 1 inch of rain may occur in the areas under warning.

Flash flooding is either currently happening or is expected in small creeks, streams, urban regions, highways, streets, and underpasses across the warned districts. Potentially affected locations include Greenwood, Abbeville, Ware Shoals, Cokesbury, and Hodges, among others.

A flood watch remains in effect throughout the evening, warning of possible flooding in numerous counties across Georgia and South Carolina. Residents are encouraged to stay informed of weather updates, adhere to safety precautions, and take necessary steps to protect themselves and their property as this weather event unfolds.
