UAW Rejects Trump’s Proposed 50% Tariffs on Canadian Autos

UAW Rejects Trump's Proposed 50% Tariffs on Canadian Autos

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has condemned former President Donald Trump’s recent threat to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian automotive goods, effective January 1, 2027. UAW President Shawn Fain issued a statement on August 25, indicating the union’s rejection of any escalation against Canada, citing the country’s strong unions and labor standards.

Trump’s threat, made on social media the day prior, claimed Canada has been exploiting the United States for years. While the UAW has historically supported Trump’s use of import taxes aimed at encouraging domestic manufacturing, Fain stated that this particular dispute with Canada does not align with the Detroit-based union’s priorities.

Fain emphasized that if tariffs are to be increased, they should target countries where automakers offshore jobs, pay low wages, maintain unsafe working conditions, and suppress independent unions. The UAW previously criticized the administration in 2025 for trade agreements with overseas partners like Japan, arguing these deals disadvantaged U.S. companies.

The UAW president reiterated the union’s commitment to ending what he termed the free trade disaster, which he believes pits workers against each other across borders and is driven by corporate greed. He affirmed support for strategic tariffs, including the 232 tariffs on auto and heavy trucks, which are blanket 25% tariffs on automotive goods from countries without trade agreements with the United States, enabled by Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

Fain concluded that tariffs are effective only when intentionally deployed to protect workers and foster manufacturing communities. He called for a permanent end to offshoring and a comprehensive rewrite of the USMCA and other unfavorable trade deals.

Unifor, the Canadian union representing auto workers and other sectors, also condemned Trump’s tariff threats. Unifor National President Lana Payne stated that imposing tariffs on Canada’s auto sector is counter-productive, especially given the 60-year history of shared production and balanced trade. Payne noted recent communication between Unifor and UAW, suggesting a shared understanding of the challenges faced by auto workers in both countries, primarily related to one-way import flows, offshoring, and unfair trade conditions. She asserted that tariffs on Canada would not benefit American auto workers.

Warren Browne, an automotive consultant and former General Motors Co. executive, warned that the 50% tariffs, if implemented, would lead to an economic disaster, causing severe hardship for both the U.S. and Canada.
